Recently, we asked you what your favorite ingredients for homemade masks are on our Instagram. You voted and now we’re bringing you our favorite mask recipes and tips so you can have a refreshing spa day at home!
As with all homemade masks, do not apply to broken or sunburned skin and never apply a mask with an ingredient you are allergic or sensitive too. If a mask feels like it’s burning, remove immediately with cool water.
This is our favorite DIY ingredient too! Honey is a readily available, sensitive skin-friendly, and easy-to-use product for face masks. It is great for acne, wrinkles, and irritated skin as it is anti-inflammatory and has antibacterial properties. You may even see a temporary brightening boost as your skin gets a blast of hydration. There is no need to get raw or organic honey for face masks - all of the same important nutrients and ideal properties are present in processed honey.
The easiest way to use honey - mix with a little moisturizer and apply! It may help to use a foundation-style brush (like the one in our Facial Treatment and Cleansing Kit or you can upcycle an old foundation brush) to apply as the honey will be sticky. Leave this moisturizing, restoring mask on for about 20 minutes to give your skin a chance to soak up the goodness, then use a washcloth to remove. If you feel any stickiness from leftover honey, you can use some gentle cleanser to remove any excess.
- 1 Tablespoon Honey
- 2 Teaspoons Olive oil
- 2 Teaspoons Moisturizer
- 10 Drops Vitamin E oil
- 10 Drops Favorite Serum (optional)
While avocados are somewhat seasonal, these 2 ingredients are great accessible options as well! Avocados, like honey, are perfect for sensitive or acne-prone skin in need of moisture and rejuvenation. Yogurt helps tone and increase elasticity, while it’s anti-inflammatory properties help calm redness. Together, these 2 create a powerhouse mask for skin that needs a little TLC!
- ½ Avocado, pureed
- 1 Tablespoon plain yogurt
- 1 Teaspoon honey
Mix ingredients together and apply to a clean face using a brush (for this mask, a silicon spatula like the one in our Face Mask Applicator Kit may help with the thicker consistency). Relax for 15-20 minutes, then remove with a washcloth and apply a light moisturizer.
Once you make a mask, be sure to complete your home spa day with a bubble bath, candles, and no screens! Giving your eyes and brain a rest from screens, even for an hour, can bring your energy up and your stress down (and that means more beautiful skin!). If you have a portable speaker, try playing some relaxing music and just chill!
